- Week 1: practice session. Walk students through every test at a relaxed pace. First attempts at a push-up cadence or a paced mile always improve on the second try, and you want that learning bump to land before the pre-test.
- Week 2 or 3: pre-test. Late enough that the roster has settled after add and drop, early enough that the course has not yet changed anyone's fitness.
- Two to three weeks before the term ends: post-test. Finals week brings stress, poor sleep, and absences. Testing earlier also leaves a make-up window for students who miss the date.
- Two separate days for each round. Run push-ups and crunches on one day and the walk test on another. A mile at full effort right after muscular endurance work lowers both results.

The Rockport 1-mile walk test is popular in activity courses because every student can complete it safely at a brisk walk. Each student walks one measured mile as fast as they can sustain, and you record four things: finish time, heart rate immediately at the finish, body weight, and age, plus sex for the formula.
Take the heart rate within the first few seconds after crossing the line. A manual count over 15 seconds multiplied by 4 works, and a wearable or chest strap reading is easier to keep consistent. The estimate comes from the regression equation published by Kline and colleagues in 1987:

Her estimate is 132.853 minus 10.766 for weight, minus 7.754 for age, plus 0 for sex, minus 50.606 for time, minus 23.475 for heart rate, which comes to about 40.3 ml/kg/min.
If her post-test time drops to 14 minutes 45 seconds at a finishing heart rate of 142, with the same weight, the estimate rises to about 44.0. Faster walking at a lower heart rate is exactly the adaptation an activity course hopes to see, and the formula rewards both.
Keep one caution in mind. The equation was developed on adults roughly 30 to 69 years old, so absolute values for traditional-age college students and high schoolers are best treated as estimates. The change between a student's own pre-test and post-test is far more trustworthy than the single number, which is one more reason to grade growth.
Five Things That Quietly Distort Pre and Post Results
- The learning effect. Students score better the second time they try any test. The week 1 practice session absorbs most of it.
- Sandbagging. When the grade rewards improvement alone, some students coast through the pre-test. Award separate credit for completing each test with honest effort, and set the growth target from the pre-test together with the student.
- Protocol drift. A new counter, a different track, or a looser push-up standard at the post-test. The written script prevents this.
- Conditions on the day. A 90 degree afternoon in September against a cool morning in December will flatter the post-test mile. Test at a similar time of day and note the weather on both dates.
- Attrition. Students who stop attending often differ from those who finish, so comparing the whole pre-test roster to a smaller post-test roster skews the average, which is why program reports should use matched pairs.

Record change two ways for every measure: the absolute change, such as five more push-ups, and the percentage change, such as 28 percent. Absolute change is easier for students to feel. Percentage change makes students with very different starting points comparable in a class report.

Publish the rules before the pre-test so every exception follows a plan.
- Missed test day. Offer one make-up window within a week, run under the same script. A student who misses the pre-test entirely gets a baseline at the make-up and a target set from it.
- Temporary injury. Test only the measures the student is cleared for, mark the rest exempt, and spread the category weight across the remaining tests.
